Torrington is the largest city in Litchfield County, Connecticut and the Litchfield Hills region. It is also the core city of the largest micropolitan area in the United States. The city population was 36,383 according to the 2010 census.

One of the great things our city has to offer is... the slice of small town values that exists downtown. A place where you may know a merchant as a friend and gather with neighbors just for the sake of being together.
Many changes have been happening downtown to restore what once was and also to create something new that reflects our modern times. If you haven't visited our downtown lately... I urge you to take some time from the hustle and bustle of your normal shopping routine to savor the downtown experience.
So, forget about the parking myths and just come on down! I promise you will find parking with less hassle then in a busy superstore parking lot. At least, if you do have to walk a bit -- it will be past charming architecture and you will not have to dodge shopping carts and cars backing into the shared road/pedestrian walkway.
Once you arrive... you will experience a little bit of your innocence lost in modern times. You may also be surprised to learn that the price for this quality experience is not as you have been warned. So, kick your shoes off (metaphorically of course) and take a stroll down newly renovated sidewalks that lead to a past you hadn't even realized you missed.
Stop in for some sweet treats and catch-up on the local town chatter or settle into to a pair of shoes personally fitted and of the quality to truly take a load off your feet. Most nights there is Music in the air and Theater here and there. The days are filled with Art & Culture and great food can be found everywhere. And, oh what food -- the kind that isn't fast because it wouldn't dare skimp on flavor and atmosphere.

Time to Leave the Town!
The city is offering a special four week yard waste collection during the weeks of November 11th thru December 6th 2013. {pdf}
Leaves and Yard Waste must be placed curbside for pickup on the same day as garbage pickup. Please do not call to schedule pickup.
All yard waste is collected in separate trucks for recycling, please do not mix or place yard waste in piles with your garbage. Yard waste includes horticultural trimmings, which are free of stones, dirt, and sharp objects; or other natural organic matter, such as grass clippings, discarded from yards and gardens.
Only leaves and yard waste bagged in biodegradable paper bags or tied into bundles not exceeding fifty (50) pounds in weight will be picked up. Individual branches shall not exceed four (4) feet in length or 3" in diameter. Leaves or yard waste raked into piles curbside will not be picked up. Biodegradable Paper Bags can be purchased at many local stores.
Residents are reminded that leaves and grass trimmings are a recyclable material and cannot be picked-up as part of our normal curbside collection and disposal program. Take advantage of our Spring & Fall clean-ups to properly dispose of these items. Grass clippings can be easily managed during the growing season by removing grass catchers on mowers and leaving the clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings are 80% water and decompose quickly. Clippings also act as a natural fertilizer returning nitrogen and other nutrients to the lawn.

One of the featured items will be a whole roaster pig, to be picked up in the spring, ready for a pig roast. There will be restaurant gift certificates, oil changes, car detailing, car washes, sunglasses, tools, jewelry, department and grocery store gift cards, wine, and many other items.

Torrington is a Christmas Wonderland:
Torrington has the Christmas House, which to the unfamiliar, is the home of a private resident who has gone over-the-top nuts decorating the outside and inside of his home with Christmas light displays, Nativity scenes, moving Santa Claus figurines, rooms full of nutcrackers, snow globes, running train sets and more. Torrington has Christmas Village, which opened for its 63rd year yesterday and features Santa and Mrs. Claus and live reindeer, and has delighted generations of children in Northwest Connecticut. Torrington has the 1900 Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum, which is decorated in turn-of-the-century Christmas style and offers tours throughout the season. Torrington has the world-class Nutmeg School of Ballet and its annual production of “The Nutcracker” at the historic and beautiful Warner Theatre. The Warner Theatre has a bunch of other Christmas programs on the schedule also, including “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and “A Very Merry Doo Wop Spectacular.” Torrington has the amazing “Christmas Angelicus” concert at Trinity Episcopal Church Dec. 19. Plus, the downtown and Coe Memorial Park are decked out in lights. Don’t forget ice skating at Major Besse Field, and one of the best sledding hills around. And shopping. Torrington has Christmas shopping opportunities galore. There’s East Main Street, and every big box store you could need, of course, but there are more small business shopping opportunities this year in our beautiful downtown. Main Street mainstays such as Libby’s Torrington Furniture, one of the best small toy stores in the state, Toy Jam, newcomers such as Barking Dog Guitar Traders and Bender Showrooms, and “shopping experiences” such as Brazen Betties, where you’re bound to see something that presents a unique gift opportunity. Come for Christmas Village and the Christmas House, enjoy the snowy scenery of the Litchfield Hills and check some hard-to-buy-for people off your shopping list.
